The ACT® Test

The ACT® is a standardized test that measures a student’s readiness for college-level coursework and is often a key part of the college admissions process. Historically, this has been the less popular test of the two major college admissions exams (the other being the SAT®). The American College Test is a multiple-choice exam composed of four sections: English, math, reading, and science. There is also an optional writing section. Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36, and the overall composite score is the average of the four section scores. The purpose of the ACT® is to assess a student’s ability to analyze and solve problems, read and comprehend complex texts, and write effectively under time constraints, skills that are essential for success in college.

ACT® Test Difficulty

The ACT® test is not designed to be tricky, but it can be challenging. The questions are designed to test a student’s critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills. It requires students to recall information, apply concepts, and evaluate arguments quickly and accurately. Assessing test difficulty is in the eye of the beholder. It will depend on the student’s level of preparation, familiarity with the subject areas, and how well the student manages time in a test setting.

Additionally, some questions may be perceived to be more or less difficult based on format (such as if they are multiple-choice, grid-in, or free-response). Expectations and goals could factor into how difficult a test-taker finds the exam. Practice will play a large role in how challenging the test is for any given student, which may warrant ACT® tutoring.

Hiring an ACT® Tutor

Your teen’s ACT® scores often play a big role in their college admissions. To get ready for the ACT®, many parents will turn to tutors to support their children. Tutoring can strengthen a student’s confidence by providing them with support via personalized lesson plans that help them achieve their best score. However, choosing an ACT® tutor that is the best fit for their needs can be very challenging and time consuming. It’s usually worth it though, as an ACT® tutor increases the odds that your child will gain an advantage over other students which may help them get into their preferred college.

ACT® Tutor Evaluation

As you seek to prepare your child with all the necessary resources to succeed, you should consider how to properly evaluate ACT® tutoring options. Several key areas to consider include:

Qualifications and Experience
A reputable ACT® tutor should have adequate qualifications, often with a degree and experience in their subject of expertise (such as the types of math present on the exam). Some tutors may be very smart about ACT® subjects, but not qualified to teach concepts because they lack the proper certification and experience.

Personalized Teaching Approach
Not all students learn the same way. Therefore, it is essential to find an ACT® tutor who offers a personalized teaching style that suits your child’s learning needs. A tutor can identify a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles, and use this information to create an effective plan. Find a tutor who can analyze your child’s needs and customize their teaching approach to ensure that your child will be able to maximize their learning potential.

Schedule Flexibility
ACT® tutors need to be flexible to suit your child’s schedule and learning pace. Find a tutor who can accommodate your and your child’s availability, including weekends and evenings. Flexibility in scheduling ensures you get the best out of the tutor’s services, and your child will have ample time to balance their schoolwork, extracurriculars and tutoring sessions.

How do ACT® tutors customize study plans to focus on specific sections of the ACT® test?

Stride ACT® online tutors customize study plans by assessing the student’s strengths and weaknesses, identifying areas that require improvement, and developing targeted strategies to address those specific sections. This includes providing practice materials, quizzes, focused instruction, and test-taking techniques to help students enhance their performance in the specific sections of the ACT®.

How many tutoring sessions might my child need to prepare for the ACT®?

The number of tutoring sessions required for ACT® preparation depends on various factors, including the student’s starting point, goals, and level of preparation. Typically, students engage in multiple sessions, with most finding value in a series of sessions to cover all relevant topics and enhance their test-taking strategies.

Which section of the ACT® is the hardest for students?

The level of difficulty of each ACT® section can vary for different students based on their individual strengths and weaknesses.
